The primary objective of Krio Descendants Union (KDU) Maryland Chapter is to promote and preserve the history, culture, and heritage of the Krios of Sierra Leone, through reflection, education, and charitable giving. Provisions for membership and governance of the Group are detailed in the Group’s By-Laws. Meetings are currently held at Good Samaritan Lutheran Church, 10110 Greenbelt Road, Lanham, Maryland, 20706, on the second Saturday of the month, January through December starting at 6:00 PM (prompt). The December meeting includes a holiday season social.
The parent organization based in Freetown is called Krio Disendant Yunion (KDY) with a motto “Leh We Ep Wesef”. There are currently eight Krio Descendants Union (KDU) organisation Chapters. KDU – Texas, KDU – Northeast, KDU Georgia and most recently KDU – London, KDU – North Carolina, KDU – Houston, and KDU – Maryland with a motto ”working to sustain our culture”. These member groups with three representatives of each group make up the leadership council currently based in the United States. The common thread and theme of these member groups is the preservation of the rich and diverse culture and heritage of the Krios of Freetown, Sierra Leone and ensuring that our children grow up to understand and appreciate them, especially for families living outside Sierra Leone. As an organisation, we hope to provide a forum for cultural expression, a conduit for channeling Krio concerns and participation in the general affairs of Sierra Leoneans at home and in the diaspora.
